DIAGNOSTIC ULTRASOUND STUDENTS TAKE TOP AWARD IN 2012 NATIONALS
The Twenty Second Consecutive Year Seattle University Student wins the SDMS Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers , Fred sample original research or a literature review. This years winner is Michael Naiman graduate of the class of 2012. Michael received his award at the SDMS Conference held in Seattle this year.
For the Twenty First consecutive year, Seattle University Diagnostic Ultrasound students have received top honors at the Annual Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) conference. The 2011 award ceremony will be held in Atlanta Georgia this year in October. The W. Fredrick Sample Student Excellence Award Competition has award categories for Original Research and Literature Review.
The SDMS Award for Literature Review resulted in a Seattle University Second place by student intern Michelle Leveque, Paper titled:
"A Comparative Analysis of Ultrasound Guided Hyperthermic Ablative Technologies for Malignant Lesions of the Liver"
The SDMS award for Original Research also resulted in a Seattle University Second place by student intern, Michelle Vo, Paper titled:.
“Diastolic Dysfunction in Vortex Ring Formation During Left Ventricular Filling"
These students completed their work as part of their senior synthesis experience. Each student will also present their paper at the awards ceremony in October 2011. The winning papers will be published in the SDMS peer-review journal, Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The faculty and staff of Diagnostic Ultrasound would like to congratulate this year’s winners.

W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award 2010-2011
This award acknowledges outstanding achievement in writing in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. The award is named in memory of W. Frederick Sample, MD, whose tremendous contributions to the growth and development of the field of sonography have influenced sonographers and physicians. Because of Dr. Sample’s dedication to teaching and research, this award is given to outstanding students in diagnostic medical sonography. This is the twentieth consecutive year the Seattle University College of Science & Engineering Diagnostic Ultrasound Student Interns have placed or swept the awards. The award winners paper will be published in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonogrpahy.

Eighteenth consecutive year awards:
Bailey Nelson, Paper titled: Fetal Intra-abdominal Umbilical Vein Varix: A Review of the Literature
The Sample award for Original Research also resulted in a Seattle University First & Second place by
student interns, Alison Freeberg and Erika Hutson respectively.
Alison Freeberg, First place paper title is: “False Positive Outcomes of Standard Morphological Imaging Predictors of Fetal Aortic Coarctation”.
Erika Hutson, second place paper title is: " An Examination as to the Usefulness of Tourniquet Application When Mapping Upper Extremity Veins for Hemodialysis Access."

Sarah Curtis, and Kilee Owens were recently honored for their work submitted to the W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award competition, sponsored by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (SDMS), at the SDMS national convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in October, 2007. The competition is international as students from ultrasound programs across the United States and Canada submit scientific papers in either the original research category or the literature review category. These students completed their work as part of their senior synthesis experience and submitted their papers for the annual competition. All three papers will be published in the SDMS’ peer reviewed journal, Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Ms. Curtis completed her BS in Diagnostic Ultrasound in September 2007 and is employed at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Her original research paper titled “Quantification of Right Ventricular Volume and Function in Patients with Previously Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot: a Comparison of Echocardiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.” was awarded first place for original research in the Sample Award Competition.
Ms. Owens completed her BS in Diagnostic Ultrasound in September, 2007 and is employed at the Children’s Medical Center in Seattle. Her original research paper titled “Velocity Vector Imaging as a Tool for Diagnosing Mild Diastolic Dysfunction as Compared to Traditional Methods.” was awarded second place for original research in the Sample Award competition.
This is the fifteenth consecutive year that an SU ultrasound student or recent graduate has received top honors in either the original research category or the literature review category or both.
