SU Students Continue to Take Top HonorsSeattle University Diagnostic Ultrasound Students Take Top Honors
Sarah Curtis, and Kilee Owens were recently honored for their work submitted to the W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award competition, sponsored by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (SDMS), at the SDMS national convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in October, 2007. The competition is international as students from ultrasound programs across the United States and Canada submit scientific papers in either the original research category or the literature review category. These students completed their work as part of their senior synthesis experience and submitted their papers for the annual competition. All three papers will be published in the SDMS’ peer reviewed journal, Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Ms. Curtis completed her BS in Diagnostic Ultrasound in September 2007 and is employed at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Her original research paper titled “Quantification of Right Ventricular Volume and Function in Patients with Previously Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot: a Comparison of Echocardiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.” was awarded first place for original research in the Sample Award Competition. Ms. Owens completed her BS in Diagnostic Ultrasound in September, 2007 and is employed at the Children’s Medical Center in Seattle. Her original research paper titled “Velocity Vector Imaging as a Tool for Diagnosing Mild Diastolic Dysfunction as Compared to Traditional Methods.” was awarded second place for original research in the Sample Award competition.
This is the fifteenth consecutive year that an SU ultrasound student or recent graduate has received top honors in either the original research category or the literature review category or both. Previous award winners include: Amy Moon, Jeff Gerig, Dale Cyr, Mary Brennan, Nicole Damato, Michelle Rhodes, Lea Guerra, Contessa Erhardt, Leigh Otting, Shaun Bornemeier, Kim Connors-Pace, Rebecca Elijah, David Stolte, Lisa LeVan, Kelly Grove, Jana Johnson, Megan Lim, Laura Thomas, Nicole White, Amelia Madsen, April Valentine, Danielle Thorsen, Joana Powell, Amber Reas, Joleen Rodriguez, Melissa Okonek, Krislynn Barnhart, Britta Fehst, Pauline Suon and Nichole Tuning. Fall 2006 was the fourteenth consecutive year that an SU ultrasound student or recent graduate has received top honors in either the original research category or the literature review category or both for work submitted to the W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award competition, sponsored by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (SDMS). At the SDMS convention in Dallas, October 2005, Joleen Rodriguez and Melissa Okonek presented their First Place and Second Place Original Research papers. Prior winners for the competition include Amber Reas, Joanna Powell, Amelia Madsen, April Valentine, Nicole White, Laura Thomas, Megan Lim, Jana Johnson, David Stolte, Lisa LeVan, Kelly Grove, Amy Moon, Jeff Gerig, Dale Cyr, Mary Brennan, Nicole Damato, Michelle Rhodes, Lea Guerra, Contessa Erhardt, Leigh Otting, Shaun Bornemeier, Kim Connors-Pace, and Rebecca Elijah. Most of their submissions were printed in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Usually at least one individual per graduating class has had a paper published in a peer review journal. Our students have also participated in other professional events such as scientific poster competitions. Locally and Nationally, our graduates have served or are serving in the following capacities: Executive Director of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
Officers in Local Societies
Many of our graduates publish in sonography journals and present lectures and case studies at local, national, and international meetings. On a national level, our graduates have served or are serving in the following capacities: American Society of Echocardiography:
Former editor of the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and past SDMS Committee Chairperson:
SDMS National Officers
SDMS State Representatives - Oregon:
SDMS State Representatives - Western Washington:
SDMS Committee Chairperson, ARDMS, ASE and AIUM Boards:
SDMS Fellow:
ARDMS Board:
Gottesfeld Award Recipients:
Numerous graduates have been involved in sonography education and some currently serve as Clinical Instructors for our Diagnostic Ultrasound program as well as other programs in the United States. The Seattle University program has several alumni as resident and adjunct faculty. A number of graduates have advanced to assume various supervisory duties:
Currently, a number of graduates are employed in leading-edge, academically oriented hospitals (the University of Washington, Stanford, New England Medical Center) and have the opportunity to participate in research activities. Several graduates have pursued other careers, including further studies in law school, medical school, pharmacy school, and other graduate fields. We expect that their Seattle University education will serve them well. |
