Graduate Programs
The Computer Science and Software Engineering Department at Seattle University offers two graduate programs:
1) Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS)
2) Master of Software Engineering (MSE)
Seattle University has long been a leader in computer science and software engineering education. It established its pioneering Master of Software Engineering program in 1979, and awarded the world’s first MSE degree in 1982. Our graduate faculty has strong academic credentials and is well connected to the computing industry in the Seattle area.

The new Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) program offers a curriculum based on theoretical foundations and practical applications. The program is designed for students seeking advanced study in computer science. Full-time students, registering for two courses per quarter, can complete the program in five quarters. The program also accommodates part-time students who can complete the program in three years. All of the classes are offered in the afternoons or evenings to accomodate working students. The curriculum consists of required advanced courses in core areas of computer science, and elective courses to help solidify and broaden understanding of computer science and software engineering topics. Faculty supervised research and/or implementation projects spanning over two to three quarters help prepare the students for future research careers in the field and/or enhance students’ programming skills and hands-on experiences in system design and implementation.
Computer Science is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation, and of practical techniques for their implementation and application in computer systems. MSCS graduates will:
Demonstrate mastery of the core areas of computer sciences, expertise in advanced areas and problem-solving skills essential to becoming competent professionals in the computing industry.
Develop the ability to apply appropriate computer science fundamentals and practices to design and implementation of computer software.
Gain research experience and depth in chosen area of concentration and demonstrate the ability to understand and evaluate research from computer science literature.
Demonstrate the ability to convey technical material through both written papers and oral presentations.
Obtain necessary background to pursue doctoral studies in computer science.
Develop sufficient mathematical and analytical maturity for maintaining professional currency in the rapidly changing field of computer science.

Seattle University established its pioneering Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program in 1979, and awarded the world’s first degree in 1982. Our program is designed with the needs of the working professionals in mind. All classes are offered in the evenings. The program builds upon the computing experience of its students and offers extensive course work in a variety of software engineering and computer science topics, with an emphasis on teamwork and a disciplined approach to problem solving. We offer a balanced core curriculum of technical and management courses, and a variety of elective streams to address areas of personal interest. The principles and techniques learned throughout the course-work are integrated into a year-long software project as at the capstone experience.
The objectives of the MSE program is to:
Demonstrate a solid foundation in the core areas of computer science, software engineering, and project management.
Pursue productive careers in sofware engineering that demosntrates technical leadership capabilities and/or project management expertise.
Communicate and function effectively as members or leaders of project teams.
Demonstrate the ability and inclination to maintain professional currency in the rapidly changing field of software engineering.
