15 April 2013

  • Congratulations to the Alpha Sigma Nu students this year! Membership into the Alpha Sigma Nu is one of the highest honors one can achieve at our institution. We send a big congratulations to Mariah Dormaier, Steven Loskot, and Sydney Dautel, all Biochemistry majors.

  • The 245th ACS National Meeting & Exposition: Chemistry of Energy & Food was recently held in New Orleans, LA.  To read more about who attended and what talks were given from our department, please click here. It was a successful endeavor and we are proud of all who participated.

  • Jean Jacoby, Associate Dean of Science & Engineering, and Professor Vicky Minderhout, our Chemistry chair, were on the local news recently in honor of National Equal Pay Day.  You can see the article and video here.

  • University of Washington Environmental Health Research Experience Program is a summer research program for undergraduate students.  They are offering a summer stipend of $5,200.  The deadline to apply is Friday, 15 February 2013.  It is sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.  For more information, please click here.

14 January 2013

  •  Profs. Latch, Alaimo and Whitlow (Biology Department) published a book chapter (DOI: 10.1021/bk-2012-1121.ch002) on a collaborative project that brings their research into the classroom for over 100 students annually.  The article, titled "Incorporating an environmental research project across three simultaneous STEM courses: A collaboration between ecology, organic chemistry, and instrumental analysis students," was published in an ACS Symposium Series called Science Education and Civic Engagement: The next level.  The book chapter describes how these faculty members designed and implemented a collaborative research-based project in their courses in ecology, organic chemistry and instrumental analysis.

  • Thermo Fischer Scientific, Inc. is currently accepting applications for the Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Programs for Winter/Spring 2013.  The deadline is Friday, 14 December 2012.  It includes two $10,000 scholarships and four $5,000 scholarships, to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major of Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related life-science field. 9 November 2012 

  • Friday, November 9th, The Chemistry Club will be having a movie night at the Douglas Media room at 8 p.m. The movie of the night is 21 Jump Street and popcorn will be provided. Please feel free to bring other treats to share. Everyone is welcome!  

4 October 2012

  • The Chemistry Club tie-dyed lab coats in the Chemistry Library on October 4th.  In the excitement beforehand, Chemistry Club Communications Officer, Ed Charlesworth, said: "I don't need to tell you why this is awesome, just come by and increase your safety equipment's snazziness coefficient!  We'll be doing the tie-dying from 12:30-1:30 p.m.  All are welcome, and bring your lab coat!"  Many students participated which made it a wonderful event to start the school year in style.

1 October 2012

  • Dr. Jennifer Loertscher and  Dr. Vicky Minderhout received the NSF award to further Biochemistry education for $540,000, titled, " Transforming Undergraduate Biochemistry Education: A Community Approach Linking Learning, Assessment and Curricular Innovation." This is their second award from the NSF in Biochemistry education and brings their total support to over 1 million dollars to the Department of Chemistry!

19 September 2012 

  • Congratulations to Dr. Ian Suydam, who is beginning the academic year as our newest Assistant Professor.  Yay!
  • We also want to extend a warm welcome to our newest faculty: Dr. Andrea Verdan and Dr. Shamila Gunatilleke.  

September 2012  

  • Dr. Eric Watson (watsone1@seattleu.edu) is on sabbatical for Fall quarter 2012 and will return to teaching Winter quarter 2013.
  • Dr. Joseph Langenhan (langenha@seattleu.edu) and Dr. Kristy Skogerboe (skogerbo@seattleu.edu) are on sabbatical for the academic year of 2012/13.

  • Dr. P.J. Alaimo has returned from his sabbatical in Switzerland this past year. Welcome back, Dr. Alaimo!

  • Doris Sidrovich, the Administrative Assistant for the Department of Chemistry, died unexpectedly on May 30th, 2012.  She was on her way to choir practice at her beloved church, Holy Rosary, in West Seattle.  Doris came to work at Seattle University in 1981 and contributed over 30 years of steadfast service to the students, faculty and staff of the College of Science and Engineering.  Doris loved her extended family and enjoyed cooking, traveling, and singing.  She was a constant and devoted member of the Department and she will be deeply missed.   

25 April 2012

  • Congratulations to Lauren Ryon for her recent award at the national meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  Lauren's poster, entitled "Investigating the Role of Sterics and Hydrogen Bonding in the preQ1 Riboswitch Binding Site," was selected as the best RNA themed poster of the entire conference.  For an undergraduate researcher to be selected for this type of recognition at a national meeting is extremely rare, and a great honor for Lauren.

  • Congratulations! to Chemistry Professor Vicky Minderhout for being named the 2011 Washington State "Professor of the Year." You can read more about Minderhout's award in The Seattle Times.
