What is the Coffee Crisis?

The “Coffee Crisis” has arisen from major oversupply in the international coffee market which has driven prices to historic lows and created a severe social and economic crisis for Nicaraguan small-holder coffee farmers (and farmers in other developing countries as well). Many of these farmers, already living below the poverty line, have been forced to abandon their farms and move to urban areas where they become urban poor, unable to sustain their families. Those who choose to remain on their land are typically unable to obtain adequate prices for their coffee crops.  The impact of oversupply on these small-holder farmers is doubly severe because their crops are of inconsistent quality and typically are sold at the bottom of the market, if they are sold at all.
