Kit for Coffee Quality Improvement

The Seattle University team, composed of Professors Susan Jackels and Charles Jackels and students, has developed a coffee fermentation test kit. This low-cost technical method was developed for producers to improve the quality of their coffee by testing fermenting coffee for optimization and control of the fermentation process. The test is specially packaged and distributed with full instructions.

Laboratory at UCA Managua

The small-holder coffee producer needs access to low-cost laboratory resources for the various certifications (particularly organic certification) required of their products. To this end, a service laboratory for environmental and agricultural services is being established at University of Central America Managua, which ultimately will have the resources to provide affordable analyses.

The UCA laboratory is already under construction and will be equipped by early 2006.
