J. Wesley Lauer received a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2006, a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) from the University of California , Berkeley in 1998, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) from Walla Walla College in 1996. From 1998-2002, he worked as a consulting Civil Engineer/Hydrologist with Questa Engineering Corporation in Richmond, California where he addressed a range of water resources-related problems associated with flood risk assessment and management, bridge hydraulics, stormwater management, and urban stream restoration.

His research focuses on sediment transport and river engineering. Specifically, he is interested in the interaction between river channels and their floodplains, over both short-term (engineering) timescales and over the longer timescales necessary for a river channel/floodplain system to evolve toward a dynamically adjusting but self-sustaining form.
