A team of four Civil and Environmental Engineering students won the first place prize at the national American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Environmental Water
Resources Institute (EWRI) student design competition.
Seniors James
Appleyard, David Julian, Darton Riely-Gibbons and Jim Smith presented the
results of their capstone design project at the 2011 EWRI World Water
and Environmental Resources Congress in Palm Springs, California.
The project focused on developing a
sustainable stormwater infrastructure masterplan for Seattle University, and
was sponsored by both King County and Seattle University's Facilities and
Maintenance Department.
The students also
received technical support from their liaison engineer Robin Kirschbaum (
HDR), CEE Advisory Board member and alumnus (BSCE '88) Michael Norton (
Stantec) faculty advisor Dr. Wes Lauer and engineers from Seattle Public Utilities.
The annual EWRI Student Design competition is sponsored by Parsons Brinkerhoff, which provided funding for the students to attend the
conference. Special thanks to the Seattle Section of ASCE for providing additional funding for travel expenses.
