Duangporn Jitjai

Major: Biology
Grade Level: Junior
From: Bangkok, Thailand

The journey of my life commenced almost two decades ago in Bangkok, Thailand where I was born and spent the first eighteen years of my life, and I belong to a compact-size family of three, with me as the only child. Through years of studying in Thailand, I experienced various American literature, history, and scientific innovations via the books that I have read. Moving to the US presented my family with many obstacles, such as the lack of health insurance. This situation forges in me a strong, unwavering motivation to practice the healing arts of medicine, to help other immigrants who share similar circumstances, and to help them free of charge. A degree B.Sc. in Biology of my pursuit would lay a proper foundation for my future career in medicine as a physician

I began abusing substances when I was 13, dropped out of high school my sophomore year, and continued to abuse drugs until I was 20. When I was 20, I had a religious experience that changed my life and brought me into a vital relationship with a God whom I had until then not known. Since then, I have been clean and sober and have begun to rediscover my love for learning. About two and a half years ago, I started going to Highline Community College, found that I loved learning, graduated with a 3.87 GPA, and am now studying mathematics at Seattle University. These are all things that I would have thought impossible four years ago. After graduating from Seattle University, I hope to work as a mathematician and eventually return to college to pursue a graduate degree.
