Speech Impairments

Some students who have physical conditions such as cerebral palsy or hearing impairments may have problems with oral communication.

Alternative Communication

In group settings allow students to use alternative forms of communicating such as writing or typing if they are reluctant to speak in front of others.

Communicating

Talk naturally to the student. Resist the temptation to complete the student's sentences or phrases. If you experience difficulty understanding the student ask him/her to break the message into segments so you can verify the intended meaning one point at a time.

Participation

Encourage the student who wants to participate fully in discussions and help sensitize other students to the need for encouragement and patience. Work with the student to determine how best to support his/her participation in oral portions of the class/program.

The Learning Center can help design alternatives for oral requirements.
