Advising Responsibilities 

Advisors are expected to: 

  1. Assist students in discerning their educational goals, including discussion of choice of major and vocation with "early stage"  freshman and sophomore students.  
  2. Work with students on developing an academic plan (2 year/4 year).  
  3. Recommend class choices on a quarterly basis.  
  4. Recommend enhancement opportunities to advisees, such as study abroad, research and internships, and refer to appropriateoffices.  
  5. Monitor student progress and discuss concerns, including intervention during the current quarter.  
  6. Make appropriate referrals to services.
  7. Provide accurate information regarding requirements, policies and procedures.

As a result of their advising experience, students are expected to:

  1. Discern their educational goals and make an educational plan that includes courses and out-of-class activities.  
  2. Know their curriculum requirements and track their progress towards graduation.  
  3. Follow SU academic policies, procedures (such as drop/add), and deadlines. (Note: university responsibility for makinginformation available and adviser responsibility for answering questions accurately.)  
  4. Use SU Online, the Bulletin, and curriculum handbooks effectively as information resources.  
  5. Use advising sessions effectively during Advising Week and otherwise as needed by making appointments, arriving on time,bringing needed materials such as a program evaluation copy, asking specific questions, and expecting advisers to work withintheir defined roles. 
  6. Check SU email at least once per week.

Advising Session Expectations 

  • All students will meet with their academic advisors at least once per year.
  • Freshmen will meet in-person with their advisor during each quarter during the freshman year.
  • New transfer students will meet with their advisor before registering for their second and third quarters.

Each student will discuss their educational plan with an advisor upon entering the major.
