Charles Lawrence, Ph.D., has been the Associate Provost for Academic Achievement since 2006. In this position, he oversees the Core Curriculum, New Student Registration, and Student Academic Services, as well as a variety of other student-related areas. He serves as chair of the Council of Associate Deans and co-chair of the University Assessment Committee, and is a member of Academic Assembly, Deans’ Council, and many other university committees. Dr. Lawrence oversees the Program Review Committee, both reviewing current academic programs and facilitating the new curriculum approval process. In addition, he has served as a Program Evaluator for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) since 2011.
Dr. Lawrence grew up in Seattle and received his B.A. degree from Whitman College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. with a specialization in classical sociological theory and historical sociology from the New School for Social Research in New York. He taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York before he joined the Seattle University Department of Sociology as an Assistant Professor in 1989. He was promoted to Department Chair in 1995, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1998, and Associate Professor of Sociology in 2000. His scholarly work has focused on restorative justice. Dr. Lawrence enjoys reading German and French mystery writers in his free time.
