Mac Users: If you believe your Mac laptop or desktop is eligible for refresh, and have not yet been contacted by OIT, please email ComputerRefresh@seattleu.edu.
** Note: Out-of-warranty Optiplex GX520s and GX620s will be addressed at the end of Phase 3, on a case-by-case basis.
Q: My computer is eligible for refresh. What next?
A: OIT will contact you (or the Technical lead in your department) to schedule your new computer install. Before your new computer arrives, please make a list of which programs you will need on your new computer. By default, the following SU-supported programs will be pre-installed on your new computer:
Microsoft Office 2007 |
DVD /CD burning software |
McAfee VirusScan 8.5 |
DVD video player software |
Adobe Reader |
Cisco VPN client (laptops only) |
Q: Will I need to back up my data before the new computer arrives?
A: OIT technicians will offer to assist with data backup before removing your old computer. Please feel free to back up your personal data from your old computer before OIT technicians arrive with your new computer. Backing up your personal data to your P: Drive, CD/DVD, or external hard drive is a good way to protect against accidental data loss and hardware failures. Backing up data before your new computer arrives will also speed up the installation time.
Q: Will I receive a new monitor with my new computer?
A: If your old computer is attached to an old CRT monitor (the large, heavy monitors), that monitor will be replaced by a newer LCD monitor. If your old computer is already attached to an LCD monitor, it will not be replaced.
Q: Can I purchase an old computer replaced in the Computer Refresh Project?
A: All out-of-warranty laptops and desktops replaced during CRP Phase 3 may be purchased after the completion of CRP phase 3. Due to licensing and data security concerns, the hard drives from these computers will be removed and erased, and not re-loaded into the original machines.
When your new computer is delivered, OIT will be able to assist with transferring data from the old computer to your new computer.
Q: Will the new computer have Microsoft Vista installed?
A: Phase 3 of the CRP will include Dell computers loaded with Microsoft Windows XP w/ Service Pack 3, or Microsoft Vista w/ Service Pack 1. Both OS options will support SU-standard software.
Q: Will the new computer have Microsoft Office 2007 installed?
A: Microsoft Office 2007 will be installed on both Vista and Windows XP computers.
Q: Will new faculty or staff get a new computer?
A: Phase 3 of the Computer Refresh Project will provide new computers only when replacing older “CRP – eligible” computers. New computers for new faculty or staff should be purchased through Technical Purchasing (technicalpurchasing@seattleu.edu)
Q: I have an old computer and an old laptop. Can both be replaced?
A: OIT is able to replace one primary-use computer, per user, per CRP phase (we are currently in Phase 3). Depending on the workload of a non-primary computer, it may or may not be eligible for replacement.
Q: I have seen the computer specs, but want something bigger. How do I acquire computer equipment that does not fit in the CRP model choices if my department is willing to cover the additional cost?
A: Each non-standard computer request will need to be reviewed by OIT. OIT will be able to cover the cost of a standard CRP-spec computer, and departments will need to cover all additional costs.
Q: There is additional software I would like installed on the CRP machine. What is the process to have this software installed on the replacement machine?
A: This will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Helpdesk for assistance with this request.
Q: I am missing licensed software that is scheduled to be in the CRP. What is the process to have this software installed?
A: Validation that the software was purchased and licensed needs to be provided before OIT will install the licensed software. For further questions, please contact the Helpdesk.
