Fall 2011 Seattle University is upgrading to Datatel User Interface 4.3

NOTE: SUOnline for faculty, staff and students is not affected by this upgrade.

Over the course of the Fall 2011 quarter, Seattle University Office of Information Technology (OIT), in collaboration with the Colleague Operations Group (COG) will move forward in implementing a new Datatel User Interface (version 4.3).

Currently, Seattle University faculty and staff log into Datatel using the Desktop 2.3 interface.  Mac users access Datatel via the Web UI at https://colleague.seattleu.edu.  As of December 31, 2011 Datatel is no longer providing technical support for these current interfaces.  Therefore, Seattle University, along with other Datatel customers throughout the country, is upgrading to the new Datatel User Interface 4.3.

This upgrade only affects the usage of Datatel administrative screens and does not impact SUOnline.

Implementation Timeline

Seattle University will follow a phased implementation approach for the 4.3 Interface.  Core administrative staff in offices such as Enrolllment Services and Financials are already using the 4.3 User Interface in production Datatel.

As Fall 2011 progresses, we will continue to roll out 4.3 to a wider administrative user base and aim to have 100% of Datatel users on the 4.3 interface by the end of January 2012.  Once the transition to 4.3 is complete, access to the Desktop 2.3 interface, as well as the current web interface, will be discontinued.

What Changes in User Interface 4.3?

The most significant change with UI 4.3 is that it is entirely web-browser-based.  There is no Datatel software on your workstation.  Otherwise, for the average user, you will notice a new cosmetic appearance, but mostly the screens you use have not changed functionally.

If you are a user of keyboard shortcuts, some of these have changed.  Click here for documentation on UI 4.3 shortcuts.
If you are a user who downloads and uploads files in Datatel, there are two new screens for this purpose (FLDL and FLUL).  Click here for instructions on FLDL for file download.  If you need instructions on FLUL for file upload, please contact OIT Application Services.

Here are some of the new features that Datatel has delivered with UI 4.3

  • a new "Context" feature enables you to create a list of people and perform lookups or data entry upon them
  • you can save forms, as well as people, to your personal “Favorites” list
  • you can access screens by searching on a keyword or description, without having to remember screen mnemonics
  • you can set personal preferences for screen size and appearance
  • export grid contents to Excel
  • save reports to PDF format
  • includes expanded Help documentation (guide to Help is here)

What are the System Requirements to Utilize Datatel UI 4.3?

In order to use UI 4.3, your workstation will need to have the Microsoft Silverlight browser plug-in installed.  If you are using a SU Windows-based PC, then OIT has already pushed Silverlight to your machine as a regular Microsoft update.  If you are using a Mac, you will need to either install Silverlight (click here for instructions if you are administrator of your machine); or you will need to open a Help Desk ticket to have OIT install Silverlight.

Before launching UI 4.3, you will need to either disable all popup blockers or add the UI 4.3 site as an exception to the popup blocker in your browser.  Be sure to also disable any third-party toolbars that may have additional popup blockers.

Datatel has certified the following platforms for UI 4.3 (users may experience variation depending on their exact desktop configuration):

  • Windows XP, Windows 7 or Vista
  • Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6
  • Firefox 3.5 or 3.6 running on Mac or Windows
  • NOTE: For Macintosh operating system, the newest Firefox (versions 7 and 8) are not yet certified and some bugs have been reported.
  • Safari versions 3, 4 or 5
  • Internet Explorer 7, 8 or 9
  • No problems have been reporting running Google Chrome on Mac or Windows
