Jean Tang is at the forefront of national effort to improve elder care. As our nation's healthcare system stretches to serve a growing population of older adults, the demand is rising for nurse educators specializing in geriatric care. Associate Professor of Nursing Jean Tang is helping to meet this need as one of just seven scholars who are serving as 2011-2013 Claire M. Fagin Fellows.

SU nursing students are offering free healthcare screenings and health classes to those in the Yesler Terrrace and Jefferson Terrace communities this fall. Nursing students regularly offer these services to the community as part of thier nursing coursework at SU. Erika Skovron (BSN '11) writes about the project, "as nursing students, our goal is to meet the members in the Seattle communities of Yesler and Jefferson Terrace. We are interested in examining and understanding the health issues affecting this particular population. Our goals in the community are to not only promote healthy living, but educate individuals about ways to prevent, detect, or treat existing health problems."

”Plight” by local playwright Sharon Nyree Williams is presented in conjunction with National Nurse’s Week and the 75th Anniversary of the Seattle University College of Nursing on Friday, May 7, 2010. The College of Nursing and Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization will be co-sponsoring the production to be held at Swedish Hospital in the Glaser Auditorium. The performance begins at 6:30 pm and will be followed by a panel discussion titled “Healthcare for Vulnerable Populations.”

Faculty emerita, Mary Bartholet, MS, RN, was inducted into the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) Hall of Fame along with five other outstanding nurses at a banquet March 18, 2010 at Salty’s on Alki. During her thirty-four year teaching career at Seattle University, Mary played an integral role in the success of the college and its students.

The College of Nursing, along with four other Washington nursing education programs, received an award from Johnson & Johnson to increase their capacity to educate and graduate more nurses. All of the recipient’s proposals shared a focus on increasing the diversity of the nursing student population. The CON’s project award, “Increasing Cultural Competency and Student Retention,” will support a two-day workshop and expert consultation during the 2010-2011 academic year. 

This professorship will allow Feldt to undertake research on the Washington State Death with Dignity Act and how the role of the nurse will be impacted by this legislation.

The Seattle University College of Nursing has begun a year-long celebration of its 75th year of educating and training thousands of nurses to pursue healthcare careers locally and across the globe. There are more than 3,800 current alumni providing critical healthcare services in the United States and abroad.

College of Nursing faculty members, Lauren Valk Lawson and Danuta Wojnar, received funding from the Nursing Faculty Initiatives Fund for projects promoting student engagement in scholarship and research. Graduate nursing student, Elena Busto, and undergraduate nursing students, Fadumo Aden and Janna Cuneo have been selected to take part.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) awarded Dr. Katherine Camacho Carr the Hattie Hemschemeyer Award at their annual meeting in May. ACNM describes this award, named after its first President, as the most prestigious honor it bestows.  

 Assistant Professor of Nursing, Deonne Brown-Benedict, DNP, ARNP, will launch her own nurse practitioner clinic during the 2009-2010 school year.

Congratulations to Barbara Anderson, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the College of Nursing, on her recent invitation to become a Fellow with the American Academy of Nursing.

Rebecca Conte (BSN '07) was named Outstanding Young Alumna for 2009 for her work in Ghana. Her accomplishments are featured in the current edition of Seattle University Magazine.

Three BSN ’08 graduates, Nikela Harris, Sandy Talioaga, and Linda Pisa, have been accepted for publication by the Journal of Holistic Nursing.
