Katherine Camacho Carr, center with College of Nursing Dean Azita Emami and Provost Isiaah Crawford, was installed this month as the N. Jean Bushman Chair in Nursing. Carr delivered a distinguished lecture titled “Caring for Women and Children: A Matter of Social Justice.”
Carr, who joined SU’s nursing faculty in 2003, is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in nursing and midwifery practice and education, curriculum and instructional design, and computer-distributed learning. She has authored more than 23 scholarly publications and 10 book chapters, and has given more than 50 presentations throughout the world. Carr is a fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She received the organization's highest honor in 2009 when she was awarded a lifetime achievement award. At SU, Carr has served as assistant dean for graduate studies. She coordinates the Nurse-Midwifery program and actively mentors numerous faculty and students. Carr received her BSN from Loyola University of Chicago in 1971, MS in nurse-midwifery from the University of Illinois in 1974 and PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Washington in 1989.
Established in 2005, the Bushman Chair is named for a beloved faculty member who taught in the college for 35 years. The chair supports a faculty member who is pursuing research, teaching and mentoring to other College of Nursing faculty with the end goal to strengthen the education and practice of nursing.
