Seattle University College of Nursing Marks Major Milestone at 75 Years
School looks to the future with grant for new technology and services to Seattle’s homeless

SEATTLE, October 9, 2009 – The Seattle University College of Nursing has begun a year-long celebration of its 75th year of educating and training thousands of nurses to pursue healthcare careers locally and across the globe. There are more than 3,800 current alumni providing critical healthcare services in the United States and abroad.

Graduates also serve the needs of many in Washington, with 80 percent remaining in the state after graduation. The college will kick off anniversary celebrations today, with a convocation for students, faculty and staff.

“At Seattle University, we have a long history of training men and women for a lifetime of compassionate care giving,” said Dean Azita Emami. “The college is looking toward the future and preparing students to meet the demands of a complex healthcare environment.”

The nursing program emphasizes community service and engagement, while preparing students to use state of the art equipment and technology the field of nursing. Nursing students work with dozens of organizations across King County, providing needed healthcare care to hundreds of low-income and homeless residents.

Students are prepared for their clinical work through the training they receive at the Seattle University Clinical Performance Laboratory, one of the most advanced nursing education facilities in the nation that allows them to hone their nursing skills in simulated clinical situations. The Jim and Janet Sinegal Initiative for Nursing Education, which funded the creation of the lab, recently awarded the university an additional $1 million grant to recruit and retain nurse educators and scholars; provide healthcare to the homeless; and continue to train students to use advanced technology in clinical education.

A number of campus, community and alumni events will be held throughout the academic year to reflect on the past 75 years, including an alumni dinner and Mass planned for April 25, 2010. For more information, visit the Seattle University College of Nursing website http://www/nursing/.
