Katherine Camacho Carr receives Hattie Hemschemeyer Award

Monday, June 01, 2009

We are proud to announce that the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) awarded Dr. Katherine Camacho Carr the Hattie Hemschemeyer Award at their annual meeting in May. ACNM describes this award, named after its first President, as the most prestigious honor it bestows.

Dr. Camacho Carr has served as the Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies at the College of Nursing for four years. She has been a member of ACNM since 1974. During that time she has held numerous positions including President from 2004 to 2006.

Dr. Camacho Carr appears here with her family after receiving the award.

The Hattie Hemschemeyer award was initiated in 1977 to recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to the field. It is awarded annually to an ACNM member of at least ten years that has a record of either 1) continuous outstanding contributions or distinguished service to midwifery and/or child health or 2) contributions of historical significance to the development of midwifery, ACNM, or maternal and child health.

The college is fortunate to have many talented nurse-midwives among its ranks. Several of them, Barbara Anderson, Terri Clark, Cynthia Flynn, and Martha Goedert, were also on hand at the meeting as presenters and to cheer on Dr. Camacho Carr as she accepted her award.
