Alums Published in AAOHN Journal
Congratulations to Alums, Elisa Apostle and Marykate O’Connell (BSN Spring 2010), on the successful publication of a manuscript they began in their Senior Synthesis course last spring at SU. The manuscript entitled Coal Mining Health Disparities and the Need for Occupational Health Nurses was accepted without revision by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses Journal (AAOHN). The AAOHN has also requested to use it as a continuing education offering. This is a remarkable accomplishment for the first submission by new BSN graduates.
The success of their publication is due in part to the mentoring and collaboration of their Senior Synthesis instructor, Toni Vezeau, Phd, RN. Vezeau encouraged Apostle and O'Connell to write the manuscript related to their project and has been working together with them since December. "It shows that with a good idea, hard work, and good support, our undergraduates can be successful in publication. It has been a wonderful collaboration," remarks Vezeau. Dr. Vezeau was recently awarded the 2011 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching and has been a faculty member at the College of Nursing for 15 years.
