Barbara Alice Anderson, DrPH, ARNP, CHES, CNM, FACNM, is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Nursing at Seattle University College of Nursing.

She has a 35 year career in teaching and academic administration. She has practiced nurse-midwifery, public health nursing, and health education domestically with vulnerable populations, leading an initiative that won the national White Ribbon Alliance award: The Safe Motherhood Initiative-USA Model Program. She has conducted research with traditional birth attendants in Yucatan, Mexico, midwives in five Nordic nations, health professionals in developing nations addressing the global nursing workforce shortage, and with Cambodian women in refugee camps in Southeast Asia. She has provided service, consulted, and taught in over 90 countries in Africa, Asia, Central America, and Latin America. She began her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia where she wrote a textbook on maternal health contextualized for Ethiopian culture. In 2005 she received the American College of Nurse Midwives Book of the Year award for her text Reproductive Health: Women and Men’s Shared Responsibility. She co-edited the 2nd edition of the text Caring for the Vulnerable: Perspectives in Nursing Theory, Research, and Practice with lead editor Dr. Mary de Chesnay (2008).

Dr. Anderson has served on the national governing board of the Global Health Council, is an associate editor of the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health, and is the representative from the American College of Nurse Midwives to the World Health Organization Collaborative Partnerships learning network, PAHO division.

Seattle University Center for the Study of Justice in Society is presenting the conference "Globalization and Justice: Interdisciplinary Dialogues" February 21-22, 2008. Dr. Anderson is session organizer and a presenter at Session 7 Global Health: Unjust Progress--The Impact of Globalization on Health. She will be speaking on the global nursing workforce shortage.

Principle mentor San Bernardino coalition for safe motherhood: Preventing domestic violence among Hispanic women in collaboration with MPH students in the Global Health Department. (This project, submitted to the White Ribbon Alliance international contest, was awarded 5th place, and the students and I presented this community-based program at the Global Health Council, Washington, D.C. (June 15, 2000). I obtained a slot for the lead student to participate in advocacy and lobbying for domestic violence legislation on Capital Hill).
