Family Weekend

  • For one weekend in autumn, parents are our special guests. Please join us for Family Weekend.

    We have planned a perfect weekend, with a variety of events for you to enjoy with your student. Family Weekend is a great way to get to know your son's or daughter's friends and professors, and to meet other parents.

    Whether your student is a freshman or senior, Family Weekend is a great way to discover the place your son or daughter calls home.

    The Seattle University Choir will have a special concert on Friday night. Saturday morning, participate in an engaging discussion about our distinctive focus on learning at Seattle University.

    Don't miss the ever popular dinner show on Saturday or the Sunday morning brunch with the Jesuits. Whether you participate in every activity, or only a few, please plan to join your son or daughter, their friends and others for a fantastic weekend. Alumni and Family Weekend has something to suit every family's taste.

    Below is the 2014 schedule for reference on what the weekend look like. Schedule subject to change. 

     Friday, October 24  2014

    1:30pm – 6pm Registration (Student Center Hearth) 
    Pick up your Family Weekend Packet that includes a map and other informative handouts.

    1:45pm - 5:00 p.m. Off-site Employer Visits

    Join Career Services staff on employer treks to two of Seattle’s fastest growing and unique companies. You are invited to join us at either Zillow or Amazon where we will be hosted by HR staff and Seattle U alums. On site we will learn about industry trends, company culture and career opportunities, and close out the afternoon with a tour of the headquarters.  (Space is limited! Preregistration required!) 

    Zillow is an online real estate database headquartered in Seattle and one of the region’s fastest-growing public companies. Zillow is transforming the way consumers make home-related decisions and connect with professionals starting with their living database of more than 110 million U.S. homes. Come and see why Zillow was just voted #1 in “Best Workplaces in Washington” for large companies!

    Amazon is the world’s largest internet company, headquartered right here in Seattle. The company began when Jeff Bezos’ started selling books out of his garage in Bellevue and the rest is history. Come and see inside of the company that has defined the global marketplace and is changing the face of e-commerce.

    3:00pm Garden Tour (departs from Student Center Hearth)
    Meet at the Student Center before going on a tour of the campus gardens led by the staff members who so diligently care for them.

    Dinner on Your Own 
    Feel free to check out one of the local restaurants suggested in our dining handout.

    6:00 - 8:00 pm Legacy Family Pinning Ceremony (Campion Ballroom) 

    Are you a member of a multi-generation Seattle U family?  Join us as we honor our Seattle University legacy families with a pinning ceremony and reception. This event is open to all Seattle U alumni grandparents, parents and relatives of current students, legacy students and all alumni who are part of Seattle University legacy families themselves. Legacy alumni will celebrate their family legacy by pinning their students with their Seattle U legacy pin. Attendees will enjoy appetizers, beer and wine. Tickets required.

    7:00 pm and 8:30 pm Choir Concert (Chapel of St. Ignatius)
    This year's Family Weekend concerts promise to be a real treat for all who attend.  The Chapel of St. Ignatius, internationally acclaimed for the beauty and unique quality of its architecture, provides a perfect setting for our fine choral groups.  As always the choirs sing a wide variety of interesting and heart-warming repertoire.  Featured works include our own Lee Peterson's Gloria and Sanctus from Missa Animae, both beautiful and moving pieces; a very special arrangement of the traditional spiritual, Steal Away, for men's voices; a lovely traditional work, O sanctissima, arranged for women's voices; a magnificent O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen, sung by our Chamber Singers;  and a wonderful setting of the prayer of St. Francis, Make Me an Instrument, by Mary McDonald. Tickets required.

    Saturday October 25

    8:30 am - 9:30 a.m./10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Registration (Campion Lobby)

    9:00 am — 9:30 am Continental Breakfast (Campion Ballroom)
    Enjoy a light breakfast while conversing with fellow parents.  Tickets required. 

     

    9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. | Family Weekend Keynote (Campion Ballroom)
    *A featured event during Alumni & Family Weekend*

    Housed in the world's greenest building, Seattle University's Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability supports student and faculty research through the lens of human and environmental well-being. Come hear CEJS Director, Dr. Phillip Thompson discuss current and future efforts to make Seattle University an international leader on environmental justice and sustainability issues."  The presentation will be followed by table discussions with faculty, staff and other families.  

    11:00 - 3:00 Bus to Bed, Bath and Beyond (leave from Bellarmine turnaround every half hour)
    Does your student still need something for their room? Is it time to stock up on supplies? Do a little shopping at the downtown Seattle store and nearby Cost Plus World Market.

    1 pm Career Discernment (Lemieux Library & McGoldrick Learning Commons- Boeing Room)
    Students share their perspectives on the Career Discernment Process.  Career Services staff will be there to lead the discussion.

     

    1:00 Women’s Volleyball vs. Utah Valley Connolly Center North Court)

    2:00 - 4:00 Outdoor Adventure Recreation Fair – demos and educational sessions (Library Plaza or Student Center Hearth if raining)
    Does your family love the outdoors?  Have a little fun with our OAR staff - tent building competition, learn more about camp fire cooking, learn to paddle board and more.  Find out what fun things SU students can do in the Pacific Northwest!  

     

    6:30 pm - 9:00 pm Family Weekend Dinner Show (Campion Ballroom)
    A welcome from our president, Fr. Stephen Sundborg, S.J, begins an evening of fun and entertainment. Enjoy a performance by “The Coats,” Seattle’s amazing a capella sensations! A Family Weekend favorite! Tickets required.

    Sunday October 26  

    9:00 am Family Mass (Chapel of St. Ignatius) 
    Families are invited to attend this Sunday Mass with the Seattle University Community. All denominations are welcome. 

    10:15 am — 11:30 am Brunch with the Jesuits (Campion Ballroom)
    Join the university’s Jesuit community for a brunch to celebrate the families, students, and community that make Seattle U special. Tickets required. 

    12:00 pm Women’s Soccer vs. Chicago State (Championship Field)
