Placement in Modern Language
All students in the College of Arts and Sciences must demonstrate competency through the level of one full year of study in a language other than English. This competency is ordinarily achieved by successful completion of the three-course sequence or testing out of some or all of this requirement. Spanish and French placement exams are available on the first day of each Summer in Seattle session (no preregistration is required) and during Welcome Week in September. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Running Start and college credit also affect placement.
Note: There is no charge to take the Modern Language Placement Exam.
It is possible to demonstrate competency in a language not offered
by the department, including American Sign Language. Contact the
department at (206) 296-5380 for more information. If English is your
second language and if your high school instruction was in your native
language, the competency requirement is waived.
