Placement in Modern Language
All students in the College of Arts and Sciences must demonstrate competency through the level of one full year of study in a language other than English. This competency is ordinarily achieved by successful completion of the three-course sequence or testing out of some or all of this requirement. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Running Start and college credit also affect placement.
Note: There is no charge to take the Modern Language Placement Exam.
It is possible to demonstrate competency in a language not offered by the department, including American Sign Language. Contact the department at (206) 296-5380 for more information. If English is your second language and if your high school instruction was in your native language, the competency requirement is waived.
