Welcome

An emphasis on the “care of persons” characterizes the Jesuit/Catholic approach to education.  At Seattle University the University Chaplain has as the special focus of his ministry the spiritual and pastoral needs of the faculty, staff and alumni/ae.  The students have their own chaplains who serve them as an integral part of an excellent campus ministry program. The Jesuit community and many others in the university community make their gifts available to this shared ministry.

The ministry of the University Chaplain has many aspects.  Times and situations arise when spiritual and personal conversation in a context of confidentiality can be extremely beneficial.  Occasions occur when it is important to search out a listening ear or reflect with someone at greater depth about matters of importance.

Within the university community and among alumni/ae particular personal needs take many forms—periods of stress or perplexing hardship, times of sickness or terminal illness, situations of conflict or special challenge, an experience of the loss of a loved one, or one’s own struggles with desires and longings hard to define.  The University Chaplain strives to be a compassionate and discerning support.

The University Chaplain assists, as well, those who wish to explore issues of faith, or to grow in a deeper capacity for prayer and discernment, or simply to come to a better understanding of how one’s own labors contribute to the vision and mission of the university. The Chaplain serves a pastoral role in the life of the university community and, to some degree, among alumni/ae who strive to live with spiritual integrity and to labor in the power of God’s own creative Spirit to shape a more just, compassionate and humane world.
