Where did you grow up?
Everett, WA, cultural capital of the Western world, but I left it when I was 14 to enter a seminary.
What degrees do you have and where did you earn them?
BA Seattle University 1969, MA University of Washington 1974, PhD University of Washington 1981. I also received a certificate of competency for my work in Polish at the Defense Language Institute West Coast in Monterey, CA in 1970.
What publications and awards best represent your work?
Burlington Northern Outstanding Teaching Award, Arts and Sciences Award for Service, Arts and Sciences Student Executive Council Award for Excellence in Teaching, McGoldrick Fellowship
What currently fascinates you?
I'm interested in larger than life characters from antiquity--Philip II and his son Alexander the Great, Cicero, Augustus, and the African emperor Septimius Severus.
Have you read any good novels lately?
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and American Pastoral, but to be honest I prefer non-fiction.
What classes are you most excited to teach this year?
HUMT 180 lets me do all that I love doing as a teacher, but teaching Latin may be my favorite thing.
If you had one piece of advice for students, what would it be?
Critical reading and excellent writing are the key to success in any discipline--or job for that matter.
What are your office hours this quarter?
10-11 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but all my students know that I am here every day and that if my door is open they are my first priority.
