"A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.”
    - Oliver Wendell Holmes

With commencement approaching for Jesuit universities across the nation, Magis sends a heartfelt congratulations and welcome to all soon-to-be alumni graduating this summer. Oliver Wendell Holmes’ quote captures what a strong Jesuit education does for so many students – stretches them to be transformed as women and men who will in turn transform the world. Magis encourages both new and seasoned alumni to continue the path of new experiences towards transformation through any one of the formative programs offered these coming months.

In light of this, Magis is excited to announce a first-ever Mexico Mission Trek to Tijuana, Mexico with non-profit organization Esperanza International on November 18-24, 2012. This global immersion program will include a group of sixteen Jesuit-educated alumni who will serve on a week-long service immersion in Tijuana. In addition to the service project, alumni participants will engage faith and justice education opportunities through pre- and post-immersion gatherings to explore the complex realities which impact the community in Tijuana, as well as reflect upon and integrate the immersion experience with each other. Priority deadline for applications is August 1st for those interested in being an alumni leader (which covers cost of airfare and participantion fee), and August 15th for all other applicants. Please read below for more details and to access an application.

We hope you have a great start to your summer!

    Sheely Mauck

This month Magis brings to you the story of alumna Sheely Mauck (Seattle University ‘09, MPA). Sheely has come through adversity in her own life, but as she says “I have always strived to be more and do more than what others might expect of me or even what I expect of myself”. This sensibility has compelled her to serve both in her community and professional life. Click here to read Sheely’s reflection.

Alumni Volunteers commit to assisting with distribution of food, checking-in clients, sorting food items, and participating in a short reflection following service. Tijuana, Baja California (Mexico)
    Submit Your Application Today!

Mexico Mission Trek aims to build a community experience for a group of sixteen Jesuit-educated alumni who will engage in a short-term service immersion with a community in Tijuana, located in Baja California, Mexico, via Esperanza International, a non-profit agency which “cultivates global citizenship through international service experiences in working toward a better world.” Alumni participating in Mexico Mission Trek will work together in service for one week alongside the community in Tijuana in order to bring about a sense of being men and women for and with others; engage in justice education in the form of social analysis and conversation on some of the critical issues impacting the community which they will serve in order to broaden one’s scope of understanding on the current realities brought about by Mexico/U.S. relations; and reflect on the experience of service with the community in Tijuana and post-trek with each other in order to deepen a commitment to a faith that does justice. Priority deadline for applications is August 1st for those interested in being an alumni leader (which covers the cost of participation and airfare) and August 15th for all other applicants.
