    Ignatian pedagogy would assert there is power in reflection.  January is a year-ending and year-beginning reflection time; while we give thanks for all the events and growth of the year gone, we also ask ourselves, “How do I want to create the new year?” What kind of commitments do I want to make to myself? To my community? We at Magis are trying to intentionally take some time to answer these questions as individuals and as a team. 

    If you set 2013 as your year to serve others or to be a person more committed to your community, we have several unique opportunities to facilitate your follow-through this year – most notably our Mexico Mission Trek for Alumni, for which it is not too late to apply (see below). As Jesuit-educated alumni, we are charged with including global communities and oppressed people of the world in our consideration of ‘community.’ We have been reminded the past month by national and world tragedies that life is precious. This increased awareness of life’s everyday sacredness helps us further welcome January and 2013 as opportunities to establish new practices which help us to best live in a way that honors all life, including our own. Consider joining us in Tijuana for a week, in April, for National Jesuit Alumni Day of Service on the 27th, or even once a month at St. Mary’s Foodbank. 

    If you have already been transformed by post-graduate service or are considering a year of service now that you are further away from graduation, join us for the Post-Grad Service Networking Event on Wednesday, January 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. See event details below.

    As you consider the people with whom you would like to deepen your relationships in the year to come or pieces of inward work you would like to accomplish, Magis hopes to offer you outlets for taking steps towards those goals.

    Zach Gerdes (Seattle University 2011), Bethany Kelsch (Seattle University 2011) and Michelle Miller (Seattle University 2012) shared a common passion for working with incarcerated youth and feared “this flame was going to be extinguished simply by evolving away from our Jesuit institution.” So they found a way to keep the flame lit and started a mentoring program for incarcerated youth that now is a service bridge for people seeking to support at-risk youth in our community.  Click here to read their reflection.

     Apply for Mexico Mission Trek: A Global Immersion Program for Jesuit-Educated Alumni
    (Applications Due Friday, January 11, 2013)
    Sunday, April 14 – Saturday, April 20, 2013
    Tijuana, Baja California (Mexico)
    Magis is excited to announce its first ever global immersion opportunity! Mexico Mission Trek aims to build a community experience for a group of sixteen Jesuit-educated alumni who will engage in a short-term service project with a community in Tijuana, Mexico via Esperanza International, a non-profit agency which “cultivates global citizenship through international service experiences in working toward a better world.” Pre-Trek, alumni participants will explore what a faith that does justice means to them, along with social analysis on some of the issues impacting the local community, work together for one week alongside the community in Tijuana in order to bring about a sense of being men and women for and with others, and reflect on the experience of service with each other via a post-Trek gathering and retreat. Deadline for applications is January 11, 2013. Cost for the immersion program is $525 (includes lodging, transportation, site visits, and meals) plus cost of airfare to/from San Diego.     Service Saturday at St. Mary’s Food Bank
    Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
    St. Mary’s Food Bank, Seattle

    Come together with other Jesuit-educated alumni to serve at St. Mary’s Food Bank in Seattle’s Central District. St. Mary’s Food Bank provides nutritious food to families and individuals who are struggling with hunger through a variety of services, including the Walk-In Program, where over 6,700 people receive groceries each month. Alumni Volunteers assist with distribution of food, checking-in clients, sorting food items, and participating in a short reflection following service. If you are interested in serving as a Service Saturday volunteer or Alumni Leader, please email Magis. Alumni family and children welcome, children as young as 7 can participate and must be accompanied by an adult.

    Centering Prayer: Finding God Within Ourselves

    Seattle University’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will feature Carlotta Walls LaNier, one of the Little Rock Nine, and a performance by the Liberation Ministries Choir on Tuesday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m. in Pigott Auditorium. Mrs. LaNier, a Congressional Gold Medal winner, was the youngest of the nine students who desegregated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. She serves as the president of the Little Rock Nine Foundation and is the author of A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice of Little Rock Central High School.     Catholic Perspectives on Sports: From Medieval to Modern Times
    by Pat Kelly, S.J.

    In his new book, Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies Pat Kelly, S.J., discusses the involvement of Catholics in sports throughout U.S. history. Fr. Kelly makes the case that not only did Catholics indeed take sports seriously prior to the Reformation, but that they even considered sports part of their spiritual values. In his book, he also offers a history of sports in Jesuit universities and sheds light on earlier cultural and theological traditions that provide us with resources for addressing problems in sports in a modern perspective – such as the recent scandal with performance drugs.     Meaning Making for Men Part I: Ignatian Spirituality for Men
