  • Magis: Alumni Living the Mission Headline
  • May 2013

Posted by Elizabeth Coz on 4/24/2013 09:27:36 AM

Today we experience the best of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer: sunny warmth with a side of effervescent green shining brightly all around us. It’s the first day of May, and we are blessed to encounter the radiance of nature’s surrounding beauty! With that gift comes the opportunity to take time to enjoy it. How about a retreat? Retreats are greatly known to offer many benefits such as to: promote self-care, increase capacity for decision-making and discernment, renew spiritual practices, reignite faith, foster intimacy, and cultivate an awareness of God and/or the Sacred in one’s life. Retreats restore by stepping outside of everyday life, and entering a space which enables one to examine and reassess how she/he wants to move forward with integrity.

This month, Magis is pleased to host its annual Young Alumni Retreat (for Jesuit-educated alumni in their 20’s or 30’s), being held at Camp Burton on Vashon Island. The retreat starts off on Friday evening (so you can get a full work day in) and ends Sunday afternoon (so there is still time to get some chores done or center before the week starts up again).  Here is what participants have to say about the Magis Young Alumni Retreat:

    • “[Come] if you need something, are searching, feel stagnant, need space/time to reflect and or reconnect.”
    • “It is a relaxing peaceful time to reflect in community and develop a deeper understanding of God.”
    • “The team is fantastic, the planning stellar, and the location incredible.”

Do any of these remarks sound like something you could use right now? If so, please see below for more details on this opportunity.  Like another participant said “Find what you didn’t know you needed!”  If you have a friend who is Jesuit-educated, why not invite them to join you, too? Let’s take in the beautiful environment of our region and center ourselves with God, together.

    Enjoy the sun!

    Brooke, Maria and Liz

P.S.: Magis’ Contemplative Leaders in Action Alumni Leadership Program is accepting applications through May 17th – see below for more details.

“The fullness of joy is to behold God in everything.” – St. Catherine of Genoa

Last month was an exciting one to be Jesuit-educated – we anticipate a decrease in the number of people to whom you may have to explain what being “Jesuit-educated” actually means with the election of Pope Francis! The national and global media coverage on what makes him as a Jesuit different from past church leaders, as well his already noticeable radical extensions of hospitality and lived expressions of justice, may come as quite a shock to people outside the Catholic world who associate the Pope with the Plexiglas box Pope mobile. But to us, it’s a welcome affirmation of St. Ignatius’ vision to live as a man or woman for and with others.

But if you ARE asked what being Jesuit-educated means, how would you respond? We think the quote by St. Catherine summarizes part of our response. With very full lives, we reflect and are able to find God in the good, the bad, and the confusing; thanks to critical thinking skills we exercise concern for the common good. In many ways, the expression by St. Catherine of Genoa, or the choice of Pope Francis to celebrate Holy Thursday in a juvenile detention center, captures the opportunity of rising to the occasion in faithful leadership when called to serve others.

This month Magis, in collaboration with the National Jesuit Service Initiative and Seattle University’s Office of Alumni Relations, invites you to carve time from your schedule to be of service to others. The National Jesuit Alumni Day of Service is an opportunity to volunteer with other Jesuit-educated alums at local Seattle organizations whose work is connected to food justice.  Registration is now open so to sign up or to learn more, see below.

Magis’ signature program, Contemplative Leaders in Action (CLA), is another opportunity to grow personally and communally in the Jesuit values of faith, justice and leadership. If you are an alumnus/na in your 20’s or 30’s who identifies as an emerging leader and person of faith, this unique two-year cohort experience may be right for you. CLA is an avenue for taking time to grow, committing to a social justice project with a small group, and learning about your role in work, family, and social life. For more information about the CLA program, see below.

As spring sets in, we hope to see you for one of our programs soon, whether as time taken for yourself, your community, or your faith!

P.S. Don't miss your chances to learn more about the CLA program at this month's Magis Mixer and the Ignatian Leadership Summit! Details for both events are below.

Magis is happy to host a night at the movies to view the film Band of Sisters, which tells the story of Catholic nuns and their work for social justice after Vatican II of the 1960’s. For Catholics who wonder what became of the nuns they knew in habits and convents many years ago, for activists who may feel profoundly discouraged given the problems of today’s world, for women seeking equality in their church, and for people of all faiths yearning for an inclusive and contemplative spirituality, Band of Sisters challenges us to ask what really matters in life. And as we seek what matters, how do we go about changing our lives and the world around us? The evening will include gathering for a meal and conversation at Piecora’s Pizza, and then walking two blocks to Northwest Film Forum for the screening. Space is limited to the first twenty alumni who RSVP to Magis (alumni may RSVP for a spouse, partner or family member to join them). March 2013

Posted by Elizabeth Coz on 3/1/2013 12:49:28 PM

We are dreaming of spring here at Magis, and we surprisingly find ourselves smack dab in the middle of Lent, with both Easter and Passover coming before the month’s end. At Ash Wednesday mass here on campus, we were encouraged and called by our own Fr. Tom Murphy, S.J. to “make this a new Lent!” He encouraged us to not pull out the same note cards from past Lenten seasons of our lives, but rather to do or make something different this Lent in order to be more attentive to and intentional in our relationship with God. So, Magis invites you to pause and prayerfully consider - How can I make this a new Lent? What do I want to do differently or risk trying this year? How can I be more attentive to where God is and continues to show up in my life?

Wherever you are on the spectrum of life, Magis has two opportunities this month to help you carve our time and space to reflect and pray around these questions. On Saturday, March 16th we will offer the annual Alumni Day of Prayer. This year’s retreat facilitators Fr. Pat O'Leary, S.J. and Cissy McLane will share wisdom on spirituality and faith in the second half of life. Then for alumni in their 20’s & 30’s, on Wednesday, March 20th, Magis and the Ignatian Spirituality Center will offer a Spirituality on Tap evening with Brendan Busse, S.J., who will reflect on the role of imagination in our being as a means of discovering and answering the call of our lives. Please see details below under “This Month’s Opportunities.”

Finally, are you committed to the values of your Jesuit education, yet find it challenging to integrate faith, justice and leadership into your profession and everyday life? If so, check out Magis’ special Contemplative Leaders in Action (CLA) two-year program for emerging leaders in their 20’s & 30’s. Magis will launch its second-ever CLA alumni leadership cohort in September 2013 and applications are now available. Please see details below.

Many blessings on your “new” Lent!

Book Talks with Author Fr. Patrick Kelly, S.J.
Catholic Perspectives on Sports: From Medieval to Modern Times

Patrick Kelly, S.J., an associate professor of theology and religious studies at Seattle University, will present his book Catholic Perspectives on Sports: From Medieval to Modern Times  at both the Elliot Bay Bookstore on March 8, 2013 and at Seattle University’s Search for Meaning Book Festival on March 9, 2013. Fr. Kelly’s book gives insight into how Catholics have engaged in play and sports from the medieval to the 20th century and how this involvement has related to theological and spiritual sensibilities. He challenges the idea that Christians did not partake in sports and play, and shows their involvement in the form of recreation in moderation as is exemplified in liturgical artwork, architecture, and in prayer books. Fr. Kelly will be talking about all this and more at both of his speaking engagements. Be on the lookout for his talk titled “Homo Ludens Revisited: Playing Sports and Human Flourishing” at Seattle University’s Search for Meaning Book Festival.
