  • Name the cafe in the Library and Learning Commons

Help us name the new café in the Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons.

The café will serve coffee, tea, sodas, sandwiches, salads and other light snacks. It will be located on the 2nd floor of the building, next to a reading room and overlooking the gardens outside.

All café name submissions will be reviewed by a university committee. Prizes will be awarded to the submitter of the winning café name, to the submitter of "honorable mention" café name(s), and to one randomly-selected participant.

Please go to tinyurl.com/librarycafe to submit your entry now.   The contest closes on March 20, 2010.

Can you post all the submissions so that we can all vote on the winner rather than some committee?

Adam, thanks for the suggestion. We've passed it on to the University Librarian, the chair of the Café Name Selection Committee.

Thank you, Adam, for your suggestion. A university-wide vote on a matter such as the naming of a building, a location, or a service can sometimes be appropriate. In this case, I’m confident that inviting the entire campus community to generate ideas for the café name and then asking a representative committee to vet them and make a recommendation to the library administration will produce the most thoughtful and prudent result. This is also a more expedient process and we are under pressure to finalize the name so that we can move forward with the bid process for a total library signage package. The Selection Committee will make its recommendation to me and I will consult with university administration to make the final decision. In the unlikely event that the Selection Committee is genuinely undecided among two or more equally good names, I will consider a vote but I will not promise one. Thank you for your interest and idea. John Popko, University Librarian

Hi Jacob, I am a member of the Name Selection Committee as well as the Communication and Marketing Team at the library. I know that a lot of people are anxious to know the outcome of the naming contest. We received over 1300 suggestions for the cafe name and the Selection Committee is still deliberating but will soon make a recommendation to the University Librarian. As of now, the date for announcing the winner has not yet been decided. As soon as we make a decision, we will be sure to publicize it. Stay tuned to the library blog or our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/seattleulibrary for updates.
