Expectations of Library Users

  • The Lemieux Library & McGoldrick Learning Commons is a private facility that supports the educational needs of the students, faculty, and staff of Seattle University. Limited access and services may be provided to members of institutions and organizations with whom Seattle University maintains formal reciprocal relationships and to Academic Colleagues and Visitors who find portions of our collection useful for their temporary research needs. The university controls access to and use of this facility in accordance with university and library policies.

Regardless of the category of library user, individuals on the premises of the Library Building are expected to comply with standards of behavior befitting a mature, academic community.

    1. Conduct yourself in a manner that is not disruptive to other library users or library staff.
    2. Trespassing, vandalism, sexually suggestive or harassing behavior, and making unwanted advances are prohibited and will result in criminal prosecution.
    3. Sleeping creates unsafe and disruptive conditions and is not permitted in the library building.
    4. Report immediately any dangerous or prohibited activity or condition to library staff or Seattle University Public Safety. Public Safety may be reached at ext.5990.
    5. Animals are not permitted in the facility, except registered service animals.
    6. No smoking.
    7. All beverages must be in closed containers, and only light, dry, snack foods are permitted, except refreshments provided as part of a University-catered event. We balance personal convenience with protection of library materials, furniture, and equipment.
    8. Keep library areas clean. Place all trash in an appropriate trash or recycling receptacle. If you see a mess or spill, report it to library staff immediately.
    9. If you must engage in cell phone conversation, please do so in an area where you will not disrupt other library users.

The SU Department of Public Safety will assist library staff in monitoring compliance with these expectations. Enforcement measures will include a request to modify behavior, removal from the facility, and/or arrest and prosecution.
