the time
"The world was one world, and the notion that a man might kill another over some small patch of it did not make sense--though Ishmael knew that such things happened. He had been to war, after all." (Guterson, pg. 321)

japanese american soldiers

"Sergeant Maples recollected for the court his astonishment in early 1943 when the 442nd--composed of Nisei boys--began training at Camp Shelby. These were boys from the internment camps, enlistees headed for the European theater, and among them, Sergeant Maples recalled, was the defendant , Kabuo Miyamoto." (Guterson, pg. 282)

prejudice and propaganda

"It was all propaganda," added Ishmael. "They wanted us to be able to kill them with no remorse, to make them less than people. None of it is fair or true, but at the same time I find myself thinking about it whenever I look at Miyamoto sitting there staring straight ahead. They could have used his face for one of their propaganda films--he's that inscrutable." (Guterson, pg. 344-345)

the home front

"The island Grange committed itself to the defense of San Piedro and promised in a letter to the secretary of agriculture to "see to the production of such fruits and vegetables as can be grown on our island and as our fighting forces might need." The army asked owners of mules and horses on San Piedro to register their animals with the county agent, describing the request in the pages of the Review as a "a patriotic obligation"; islanders were also asked to check their automobile tires and to drive in a manner consistent with preserving them: rubber was in short supply. " (Guterson, pg.189)

post-traumatic stress

"His cynicism--a veteran's cynicism--was a thing that disturbed him all the time. It seemed to him after the war that the world was thoroughly altered. It was not even a thing you could explain to anybody, why it was that everything was folly. People appeared enormously foolish to him." (Guterson, pg. 35)
