What is Theology of the Body?
Theology of the
body has been described as that discipline which reflects upon
a faith understanding of the lived body and the material universe. It
utilizes what John Macquarrie has called the six factors formative
of theology: experience, Revelation, Scripture, tradition, culture
and reason. (Prokes, p26)
Pope John Paul
II’s Theology of the Body explores the
profound interconnections between body/sex and the deepest questions
of human existence, including:
• What is the meaning of life?
• Why did God create us male and female?
• How do we attain true happiness on earth?
• What kind of joys await us in heaven?
• Why is there evil in the world and how do we overcome
it?
• How can we experience the love we long for in the depth
of our hearts?

vision of the human person truly worthy of man.
Theology
of the Body: The Online Resource for Pope John Paul II’s
Theology of the Body
“This site is dedicated to the Pope's
revolutionary and life-transforming message of hope that is designed
to counteract societal trends that leave the body often seen as
an object of pleasure or as a machine for manipulation. John Paul
II debunks the myth that the Catholic Church is "down on
sex." through both his 'Theology of the Body' and other earlier
works including 'Love and Responsibility'. He encourages a true
reverence for the gift of our sexuality and challenges us to live
our sexuality in a way worthy of our great dignity as human persons.
His theology is not only for young adults or married couples,
but for all ages and vocations since it sums up the true meaning
of Man.”

What Does Feminist Theology Say
About the Body?
"For God does not despise what he has
made, nor does he disdain to serve us in the simplest natural functions
of our body, for the love of the soul which he created in his own likeness.
For as the body is clad in cloth, and the flesh in skin, and the bones
in the flesh, and the heart in the trunk, so are we, body and soul,
clad and enclosed in the goodness of God... how sweetly and tenderly
the Creator loves us. -- Julian of Norwich. Showings (New York: Paulist,1978)

What Does Male Spirituality Say
About the Body?
The quest...a pilgrimage
into the depths of self. We leave the sunlit world of easy roles and
prefabricated tokens of masculinity; penetrate the character of armor,
beneath the personality, and plunge into the chaos and pain. This isn't
the fun part of the trip. It's spelunking in Plato's cave, feeling through
the illusions we have mistaken for reality, crawling our bodies through
the drain sewers where forbidden "unmanly" feelings dwell,
confronting the demons and dark shadows that have held us captive from
their underground haunts. --Sam Keen, Fire in the Belly: On Being a
