EndNote

Endnote allows you to organize bibliographic citations and to create bibliographies. Time-saving features allow you to download references retrieved from Lemieux Library databases into an EndNote library and create bibliographies in a variety of formats (such as APA, MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, etc.) using Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. For more information on EndNote, visit http://www.endnote.com/

EndNote is available to Seattle University faculty, staff or students to install on their office or home computers. Contact the SU IT Helpdesk (206.296.5571 or helpdesk@seattleu.edu) for information on how to install Endnote on-campus. To install Endnote at home, complete a Software Checkout Form.

Endnote Tip Sheets are available at http://www.endnote.com/support/entips.asp.

There are three ways to enter citations into an EndNote library:

  1. Download references from a database and import them into your Endnote Library.
  2. Search a remote database from Endnote and save references to your Endnote Library.
  3. Manually enter references into your EndNote Library.

Download references from a database and import them into an EndNote Library:

  1. Search a database. (List of Lemieux Library databases by title and subject)
  2. Download references from a database. See instructions below by database name.
Note: This section is under construction and instructions are not yet provided for all Lemieux Library databases.
  3. Import references into Endnote. Some databases offer a direct export feature. If the database you are searching does not offer a direct export feature, you will need to save the citations and import them into EndNote using Import Filters.
Import Filters: In order to successfully transfer citation information from a bibliographic database to the proper EndNote field (e.g., article title), you need to use the proper EndNote filter. Import filters are used to decipher information that has been downloaded from an online database. EndNote 7.0 includes preconfigured filters. See Import Filters below by database name. Check the EndNote web site occasionally for updates or changes to filters for the databases you use most often.

Search a remote database from EndNote and save references to your EndNote Library.

The Connect feature in EndNote allows you to search an online database using EndNote's search interface and directly import the records into EndNote. This option streamlines the download and export/import process but the EndNote search interface is not as robust and sophisticated as searching via a database.

  1. Select a Connection File: Under Tools, choose Connect, locate the connection file for the database and click on the Connect button. See Connection Files below by database name
    Note:
Not all databases have connection files. Seattle University does not subscribe to all the databases included in the Connection Files folder that comes with EndNote. Check the EndNote web site occasionally to see if there have been any additions or changes to connection files for the databases you use most often.
  2. Search a database
  3. Retrieve references

Note: To add Lemieux Library's Catalog to the list of connection files so that you can search the Library's catalog via Endnote, select "Edit", "Connection Files", "New Connection". Under "Connection Settings", enter the following fields: Server: Seattle University Server Address: library.seattleu.edu Database: Library Catalog Database name: INNOPAC Element: F Port ID: 210 Record Syntax: OPAC Text: Latin-1
