According to the website the original intent of this series was to disseminate information about lesser known countries; 102 counties are currently in the database. The database republishes the hardcopy country studies and are book length information.

World Factbook
Published by the CIA, with some information supplied by other agencies, this online source is one of the agency's basic tools for country information. In addition to current information on economic and business conditions, the Factbook contains online maps, and extensive geographic information. Definitions for political, economic and environmental terms are included. The appendixes contain a glossary of abbreviations, international organizations, selected environmental agreements and geographic data codes.

Database which specializes in news, business and legal information. Its news section contains access to international newspapers as well as national and local news. Full text of the New York Times is available in this database. There are separate business news and industry news files as well as a link to accounting publications in the business module. In the business module, you can also search for company financial information with access to Disclosure, Hoover"s, and Standard & Poor's publications. Links to EDGAR and SEC filings. The Reference section contains a country profile section and access to the World Almanac.

In addition to offering practical information for the potential investor or business, this site also has much to offer the visitor interested in statistics on the regional economic conditions as well national economic data.
 
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
One of the regional arms of the United Nations, this Commission focus on the social and economic development is carried out through its divisions: emergins social issues, environment, technology, transport, trade, poverty, statistics, administrative services and programme management. This Commission publishes a great deal of information, some of it available online. Its major survey, Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific is in pdf format, as are some of the environmental and transportation publications.
 
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
One of the five regional arms which reports to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, this Commission includes on its online site access to charts, maps, white papers and newsletters. As with the other Commissions, some material is for sale and other publications may be ordered for free. The Commission focuses on the concerns of its 13 members with divisions for research on sustainable development, economic analysis, social development, globalization and information technology. The web site is easy to navigate and links the user to other UN resources.
 
Economic Commission for Africa
Promoting economic and social development among its 52 members is the mission of this arm of the United Nations. Program areas include gender issues, development management, information and environmental management, policy analysis and regional integration. Full text of the publications from these programmes inform visitors to this site.
 
Economic Commission for Europe
This regional division of the United Nations has several units to promote economic development in this region. Some of these units have links to news items, others have speeches or presentations online, while still others maintain fulltext pdf files or databases. For example, the Statistical Unit has several databases online: Gender Statistics, Human Settlements, Demographic Databases, Trends in Europe and North America as well as two specialized market databases on robotics and gas. The Economic Analysis Unit has pdf files available of the Economic Survey of Europem Economic Bulletins and Occasional Papers.
 
Global Issues on the UN Agenda
Excellent starting part for international topics. Provides a clear menu of issues with links to resolutions, other documents, speeches and other related organizations or agencies.
 
INFO COMM Market information in the Commodities Area
UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) sponsored site. UNCTAD's goal is to create a portal of over 30 commodity profiles. In addition, the site gives access to documents in the areas of market information, risk management, structural finance, natural resources, and emerging exchanges.
 
International Monetary Fund
The IMF is an organization of 184 member countries which was created to facilitate monetary cooperation and exchange stability. It seeks to promote economic growth and employment. It functions as the international agency which gives temporary assistance to countries with balance of payments debts. The web site is packed with information about the Fund and its activities. So much so that it is well worth using the First time visitor link for an overview of the site's contents. The IMF at Work links to Research and statistical infomation, as does the IMF Finances section. The Country section gives information on countries and how each country relates to the Fund. Policy information can be found in the News section. The Publications section contains the fulltext of several IMF series.
 
International Observatory of Labour Law
A gateway for labour information, the International Observatory of Labour Law profiles labor law in ILO member countries.
 
Jubilee Research
Economic think tank which focuses on international debt and finance The web site provides news and reports on debt including ecological debt, HIPC and other economic justice issues
 
OECD
(Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) is a membership of 30 countries who are committed to a "market economy and pluralistic democracy." Originating after WWII as OECC, this organization's first function was to coordinate American and Canadian aid to Europe as a result of the Marshall Plan. Its original purpose has expanded, as has its membership. In addition to countries in Europe its members include Mexico, Japan, Korea and Poland. It is know for its statistical surveys and country economic surveys. The library subscribes to some of the series from the OECD. The call number above refers to the country economic surveys. Access to informationn on the web page includes some data and reports.

Poverty.net
Part of the World Bank's Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network, this site has developed links to resources for understanding and responding to poverty. It also has created links to the Literature of Poverty. case studies and chapters from books make this a worthwhile site.
 
United Nations
The web page for the United Nations gives access to many of this agency's reports. As for statistics, the Millenium Indicators and Social Indicators are open to the visitor. Other data sets are restricted to subscribers. Check the library catalog for holdings of U.N. publications.

Full text of legal and official documents through its Document Gateway. Trade statistics are also available online. The library subscribes to the Annual Report of the WTO.

ELDIS-gateway to development information
This portal to development information is truly a gateway to information. Eldis is funded by Danida, Norad and Sida and maintained by the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex. Especially strong are its many extensive resource guides on topics ranging from HIV/AIDS, debt relief, questioning development and more. More than just web links, the resource guides discuss themes and issues relevant to each guide. Web sites are noted as to whether they have been reviewed.
 
The International Economics Network
Created and maintained by Jerome Lim, a UC Santa Cruz doctoral student, International Economics Network is a gateway to links on international economics. The web page is divided into linked topics including International Economics and Global Business and Finance and International Development. Each section has has annotated links under subtopics. For international economics, you can find links to International trade, finance and geography. To accomodate different audiences, there is a Research Papers link for faculty and graduate students, while the News and Commentary will satisfy the undergraduate user with current news items, some of them archived for a year.
