Tutorial for International Business Consulting
Research
Need to find information about
international markets for a research project? Or
perhaps your project involves determining best practices for customer
support. For many projects,
a good start point is to explore the information resources available
through the library. Because of the individualized needs of your
clients, you will need to be creative and flexible in your search
for resources.
Use this guide specifically geared to the Mgmt 572
assignment to identify potential print and online business resources.
What Do I Need to think about first?
1. Clarify the research question:
Note any specific information requirements,
e.g distribution assessment, identifying partners, pricing
Key terms: could be specific countries, industries.
What do you already know? Do you need to find
background information?
2. Identify the best information sources: formal
and informal information sources:
Some Possibilites:
Scholars in the field—Journals, books
Practitioners-journals, magazines, web,
Media sources-newspapers, popular magazines

1. How do I find information
on companies?
Consider these factors:
1) Business Location. Since many sources are arranged by geography,
determine whether you are looking for a regional or local directory,
a national source or international directory.
2) Business Structure. Is the company publically or privately owned?
Because publically owned companies are required to disclose financial
information to the SEC, it is usually easier to find information
on publically owned companies.
3) Industry or sector. There may be specialized directories which
target specific industries, or ones that focus on specific rankings
or other criteria.
4) Information need. Sources can vary in the amount and depth of
information: from directory or financial datai to nformation on
competitors, company history, corporate culture, growth potential,
challenges, etc...
Review the sources below for this type of information.
