Lemieux Library implemented a new program to acquire newly published
books in the following subject areas: Business and Economics, Education,
Nursing, Psychiatry, Psychology, Public Administration, Software Engineering,
and Theology.
The Librarys book
approval plan has been implemented with Blackwell North America,
Inc. a respected book supplier with a proven track-record in servicing
book approval plans for academic libraries. This method of acquiring
books is complementary to the traditional method of selecting individual
titles one at a time. Under an approval plan, the book supplier
automatically ships newly published books based on a detailed profile
of the exact subjects and types of books desired. These subject
profiles are carefully crafted and refined by the Librarians, with
the assistance of the Faculty Liaisons and with the guidance of
the Blackwells approvals professionals. When the books arrive, they
are reviewed by faculty and librarians, and are only kept on approval
-- any unwanted books are returned.
Book approval plans have been utilized by academic
libraries for more than a generation. Increasing numbers of academic
libraries (large and small) are turning to book approval plans as
a primary tool for building and maintaining core collections. The
book approval plan is meant to enhance the Librarys collection
in each of the subject areas, as well as to permit the Library to
acquire, catalog, and process books in a more timely and cost effective
manner.
In the first year we acquired 1472 books in this manner.
Feedback from the Faculty has been positive and Library staff have
been pleased with the streamlined process. The size of Lemieux Librarys
collection does not warrant use of an approval plan for all subject
areas. However, in appropriate areas, it has proven to be a valuable
addition to our methods for acquiring books.
