Sound Shake '08 on March 5
Sound Shake '08 is coming. On March 5, Seattle University will participate in the region-wide earthquake simulation drill. A brief overview of the day’s events was shared in last week's e-mail. With the exercise just days away, it's time to provide a full description of what is expected of faculty, staff and students.
- Earthquake and evacuation drill - Campus-wide approximately 7:54 to 8:20 a.m.
- All students, faculty and staff are expected to participate in the drill.
- The morning of Wednesday, March 5 two Sound Shake '08 messages will be distributed campus wide via Text Messaging; Area Wide Broadcasting on Blue Light Towers; Campus wide e-mail & voice mail.
- The first message will instruct community members to duck-cover-hold (under a desk or chair) for the simulated earthquake.
- The second message will provide instruction to slowly and safely exit each campus building and go to the nearest campus evacuation/assembly location (see below).
- Building Marshals will be at each campus evacuation/assembly location to provide further information. At approximately 8:20 a.m. all community members return to classes and offices.

Faculty and staff are invited to visit and observe the EOC in action. (The room will be reconfigured from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for a forum.) Campus forum - Student Center, room 160 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
- Campus Public Safety will lead a debriefing on the simulation exercise and invite feedback and questions from students, faculty and staff. (Venue to be confirmed.)
Be prepared
While the earthquake drill is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to practice emergency procedures as a campus, it is equally important that all members of the SU community take the following measures to be individually prepared for crisis situations:
- Sign up, if you haven't already, to receive emergency text messages.
- Create a personal disaster response kit. Remember to include anything you might need for an extended period of time, such as medications, eyeglasses/contact lenses, etc.
- Develop your personal communication plan for family, love ones, and friends.
- Familiarize yourself with the What to Do! emergency guide. If you need a copy of the red booklet, contact Campus Public Safety 296-5996.
- Visit the newly redesigned Campus Public Safety website for more resources and information.
