Student Loan update

April 22, 2008

Recent national stories have been raising concerns about the availability of student loans for the upcoming fall term. We are fortunate the national lending crisis is not affecting Seattle U students’ access to educational loans. The University participates in the Federal Direct Loan program where students borrow directly from the Federal Government. Federal Stafford Loans and Federal PLUS Loans will remain available to our new and continuing students. Last year, 70% of SU students borrowed through these programs totaling more than $52 million. Many of our students borrow loans through private lenders. Our major private lenders have assured Seattle University that they will continue to participate in the student loan business. As has always been the case, applicants with a history of poor credit have a more difficult time qualifying for a private loan. However, co-signer loan options remain available and the Financial Aid staff will work with students to help them find a lender. Last year 18% of SU students borrowed through these programs totaling more than $18.6 million.

Policy Change for Non-Native English Speakers

June 5, 2007

A significant change in the English-proficiency requirement for non-native English applicants to Seattle University graduate programs has been inacted. Applicants for whom English is a non-native language must demonstrate English proficiency regardless of English language studies, academic history, residence in the United States or an English-speaking country, or immigration status. However, graduate and post baccalaureate applicants who received a baccalaureate degree or higher from Seattle University or a recognized college or university in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia who remain in a country where English is the primary language for two years will not be required to submit English proficiency test scores. Seattle University maintains the right to require English proficiency testing when deemed necessary. The entire policy can be reviewed at http://www.seattleu.edu/registrar/page.aspx?ID=200.
