• 31st Anniversary Gala Banner FINAL

We are pleased to announce the entertainment for the Seattle University 31st Annual Gala:

Michael Benson, bandleader, keyboardist, guitarist, vocalist, singer/songwriter, record producer, and music educator, is one of a rare breed of lead-singing keyboardists.  He lays down elegant jazz piano, or multi-layered keyboard parts while delivering vocals ranging from Nat King Cole to Tony Bennett, Jon Bon Jovi to Steve Perry to Usher.  Michael glides easily through a diverse repertoire of music, with stylistic integrity to create a rich, unforgettable experience for his audiences.

At age 12, Michael began his professional music career on Mercer Island, as lead singer/lead guitarist in a rock ‘n roll band called “Spring Fever.” An interest in jazz led him to study with noted jazz pianist Jerry Gray in his junior year of high school.  Jazz became his new passion, and while going on to earn his B.A. in Music Education at the UW School of Music, Michael formed a jazz quintet, for which he composed and arranged.  This quintet eventually led to the establishment of The Michael Benson Band in 1975. In ’87, he earned a Master’s in Secondary Choral Music Education from the UW, which he put to good use for the remaining years of his high school teaching career.

Today, The Michael Benson Band consists of five members (Michael Benson, Michael Eads, Dewey Marler, Pete Molner and David Peterson); and is the most sought-after band in the Northwest, playing 100+ non-club dates a year. The band is known for their fun, engaging and interactive live show, often making guests who are willing a part of the performance. The Michael Benson Band was voted The Knot’s “Best Pick” from 2007-2009 and has been voted “Best Live Entertainment” 11 consecutive years by Seattle Bride Magazine.
