Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons
The Lemieux Library renovation and McGoldrick Learning Commons expansion is currently in construction documentation. This $55 million project received board approval in 2007 and is heading toward construction in summer 2009. It will renovate the 1960s-era library and build an adjoining high-tech learning commons to serve the university’s 7,000-plus undergraduate and graduate students. This project received an enormous boost in the form of a $10M challenge gift from the Gates Foundation, the first major donation in the campaign. Click here to read more about the gift.
A program and concept plan was completed in August 2005. Long-range planning initiatives have been incorporated into the project to address the goals of integrating information technologies and resources into a learning environment. Hundreds of seats, many of them technology-rich, are planned throughout the facility for individual and group study as well as instruction. Key to creating an exceptional destination for the campus community is the incorporation of a number of new spaces in the library, including:
- A new Information Commons, with computer stations, group study rooms, and adaptable group instructional facilities. The Information Commons will enhance information literacy and expand on the library's reference and research support activities that are a hallmark of the library's current services.
- The Academic Support Center, which co-locates crucial units such as the Learning Center, the Writing Center, the Math Center, and Center for Student Success, such that the library can develop integrated services and collaborative programs.
- Multimedia Development Center with production, editing, and screening facilities which allow faculty to develop new digital and media-based curricula and students to use new technologies in preparing their work and research.
- An large library instructional center will facilitate university outreach and connections to institutions worldwide.
