Center for Service and Community Engagement

"When the heart is touched by direct experience, the mind may be challenged to change. Personal involvement with the innocent suffering, with the injustice others suffer, is the catalyst for solidarity, which then gives rise to intellectual inquiry."

- Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J.

Serve Seattle

For over a decade, Seattle University students have been participating in an annual service project designed to help new students connect with the campus community and the wider Seattle community while providing a meaningful service to the city. For the past three years, the project has focused on environmental resoration.

During Welcome Week, students, staff, faculty, and alumni spend one clearing debris and non-native plants in Seattle parks.

Co-led by a student and a faculty or staff member, each team accomplishes in a single day what would taken a single park gardener an entire month to complete. By weeding and cleaning neighborhood parks, students help to create a healthier and more beautiful environment for local residents.

“Serve Seattle helped me get acquainted with people in the community and see how we fit together in the spirit of service.” -Sophomore Rosemary Slavkovsky
