Center for Service and Community Engagement

"When the heart is touched by direct experience, the mind may be challenged to change. Personal involvement with the innocent suffering, with the injustice others suffer, is the catalyst for solidarity, which then gives rise to intellectual inquiry."

- Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J.

Service Immersion Trips offer students opportunities to explore social, cultural and environmental issues affecting our regional communities. Each immersion experience provides a different focus for serving and learning.

Students experience direct contact with the community through service providers, engage in conversations with community leaders, and integrate their experiences through individual reflection and group discussion. These often life-changing moments enable students to grow into leaders who can address real community needs and create social change.

Each immersion is organized and led by student leaders with support from CSCE staff. Once participants are selected, each group meets prior to departure to prepare for the immersion, get to know one another, and begin to reflect on the social issues that will be explored through the immersion. Because fundraising often consumes a great deal of time and energy, CSCE’s Service Immersion Trips are funded through participant fees that cover the cost of food, lodging, and transportation. Any student may request financial assistance and CSCE staff will work with the Financial Aid Office to determine eligibility for fee reduction.

"Social change is a two-part process... you need to create the change and be the change." - Immersion participant
