Program Overview
Seattle University Children's Literacy Project (CLP) recruits, trains, and places volunteer tutors in local Seattle schools. Our aim is to foster the academic support and encouragement youth need to succeed and thrive. Tutors volunteer on-site in schools to help youth become better readers, meet academic performance standards, build basic skills, and increase their self-esteem and motivation to learn. The 2010-2011 academic year marked a significant organizational change for the Children's Literacy Project. The CLP is a key component of the Seattle University Youth Initiative.
Volunteers and Service Learners are needed to support the Seattle University Youth Initiative's partner schools. All of our partner schools are located near campus in Seattle’s Central District: Bailey-Gatzert Elementary, Washington Middle School, and Garfield High School. While our top priority is to concentrate our efforts in these Seattle University Youth Initiative partner schools, we will continue to support long time CLP schools which include: Thurgood Marshall Elementary, Madrona K-8, St. Therese and St. George Parish School.
NEW VOLUNTEERS AND SERVICE LEARNERS are required to attend an Orientation Session prior to volunteering. Orientation sessions are held at the beginning of every quarter. Please check back for updates on orientation session scheduling or contact the CSCE with any questions.
