Special reception to honor Dean Sue Schmitt

A reception to honor Sue Schmitt will be held 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, in the LeRoux Conference Center (STCN 160). Schmitt is stepping down from her administrative role as dean of the College of Education on July 31. Schmitt will take a sabbatical and continue to serve on the college's faculty.

"During her 16-year tenure as (d)ean, Dr. Schmitt provided the vision that propelled the college to new levels of regional, national and international standing," Provost Isiaah wrote to faculty and staff on June 26.

In his announcement, the provost recognized Dean Schmitt's many accomplishments: "During her time as Dean, Dr. Schmitt oversaw the planning and preparation of three NCATE accreditations and a number of state and national accreditation and renewal processes involving the college's K-12 and counseling programs.

"In AY 2009-10, Dr. Schmitt helped to organize the COE's 75th anniversary celebration (a milestone event that drew over 1,000 alumni and friends to campus), and in AY 2010-11 she oversaw Conversation Education, a critically acclaimed symposium on education policy that brought great visibility to the university. This past year, she led a collaborative and successful process to revise and restructure the college's doctoral program. Additionally, Dr. Schmitt spearheaded an effort that will bring a Seattle Public Schools Middle College program to the university to facilitate the COE's academic programs, advance the research and scholarly agenda of its faculty and students, and support the work of the Seattle University Youth Initiative."

In a letter to College of Education faculty, staff, students and alumni, Schmitt wrote, "It has been an honor to be on this journey with all of you the past 16 years. Together we have been able to do wonderful things to assure a high quality education for all of our students and to provide outstanding scholarship to the field and service to the university, the community, policy makers and professional associations."

The provost wrote that an interim dean will appointed in the coming weeks, and a national search for a permanent dean will be launched later in the year with a view toward filling the position by July 2013.
