Guila Muir, adjunct in the College of Education, recently celebrated her 55th birthday (thus the two fives she's holding up) in unusual fashion—she swam 1.5 miles from Alcatraz Island to the San Francisco.
“I figured that since I never quite made my goal in the pool of ‘50 in 50 by 50’ (50 laps—2,500 yards—in 50 minutes by the time I was 50,) this is almost as good: my 5th swim from Alcatraz at age 55, in (about) 55 minutes.”
Of the swim itself, she reports: “The water was choppy with swells…It was a much more fun swim than the quickie one last year simply because there was more to do—the current wasn’t helping much this time.”
