Mike Attie, adjunct professor of English, who does a lot of volunteer work at Seattle Children's Hospital, came up with a fun idea for the patients and proposed it to his students, who then created this video. The video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Beyond the classroom

TentCity3_EdReedStudents in Ed Reed’s World Poverty course received a real-world perspective on homelessness when they visited Tent City 3 last month. The assistant professor in Matteo Ricci College led 25 students to homeless encampment, which was hosted at St. Mark’s Cathedral on Capitol Hill. They were joined by M. Barrett Miller, managing director of Let Kids Be Kids, a nonprofit organization that advocates for children on poverty, homeless, HIV/AIDS, social justice and environmental issues. “I was proud to have played a role in this visit as well as being enormously honored by these students reading View from the Tent (the book Miller compiled) as one of their class readings prior to this visit,” Miller said. “Thank you Dr. Reed for stretching education out into the real world of day to day survival for some in our community.” You can visit Elise and Cody to see two students share their thoughts on the visit. SU hosted Tent City 3 on its campus in 2005.

Father Steve's high-school nickname

Posted on Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Congratulations to Patrick Rossmann of Student Development and Gayle Sommerfeld of University Advancement for correctly identifying the nickname by which our president was known in high school. Each received a Commons hat for their good work. Father Steve revealed his nickname just prior to the announcement of the winning entry in the contest to name SU's newest sculpture outside the library. Check out this video to hear for yourself what our president's pals were calling him way back when:
