The mission of the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programs “to prepare ethical and reflective TESOL professionals for service in diverse communities”. The TESOL program prepares graduates to teach adults or children with varying instructional needs and who are interested in acquiring proficiency in English as their second language, either in the United States or abroad. A state issued teaching certificate is required to teach in the K-12 system in the U.S.
The program offers a master of arts degree, a master of education degree, or a post-master’s certificate in TESOL. All programs emphasize proficient teaching. Courses combine course planning and instructional practice with theoretical coursework in language acquisition and linguistic theory, supplemented by internships and fieldwork. The program also places emphasis on the value of continued involvement in professional organizations.
