Endorsement K-12
TESOL graduate students who already have a state of Washington teaching credential and a primary endorsement in another area may choose to obtain a supporting endorsement in ESL (WAC 180-82). At Seattle University, twenty-five quarter hours of study in English as a Second Language are required for the ESL endorsement. An individual’s course work must have included the following subject areas:
- Language and Literacy
- Culture
- Assessment
- Professional Leadership
In addition, coursework and/or experience must include both methodology for teaching K-12 ESL students and also supervised experienced teaching K-12 ESL students.

S-TESL courses for the Advanced Certificate in ESL (total of 24 credits) meet all of the subject matter and methodology requirements for endorsement by the State Board of Education and the additional 1 credit EPDES 540 course meets the field experience requirement. Information about the ESL endorsement program at S-TESL is available on the S-TESL web page for an ESL endorsement. Seattle University has a cooperative agreement and works very closely with the School of Teaching English as a Second Language (S-TESL) so that S-TESL can provide all the courses needed for the Washington State ESL Endorsement. As determined by the SU TESOL program director, regular program TESOL courses taken at Seattle University do not apply toward an ESL endorsement.
