Students with disabilities face enormous challenges in today's educational system and society. These students require teachers with the highest quality of specialized training and who are committed to helping those most in need. The Special Education Program at Seattle University prepares teachers to provide specialized assessment and intervention services to the linguistically and culturally diverse population of students (K-12th grade) with disabilities.

Who should consider this program?

The M.Ed., Ed. S., and Endorsement Only in Special Education are primarily for certified general education teachers who wish to prepare for a new role in special education or who wish to remain in the general education classroom but gain more knowledge of how to best work with and advocate for students with disabilities. Both programs are also for those working with non-certified students with special needs in a private setting. The Master in Teaching with Special Education Endorsement program is for students wanting to enter the field of special education, who are without a teaching certificate, and who are willing to pursue a course of full time study.

Program Design

The M.Ed., Ed.S., and Endorsement Only programs are designed for full-time students as well as working professionals who take one or two courses a quarter during the academic year and one or two courses during the summer. In consultation with the program director, students can develop a flexible course of study to meet their individual program goals. Students without a master's degree enroll in the M.Ed. in Special Education program. Students with a master's degree, enroll in the Ed.S. in Special Education program.

Students without a teaching certificate, and who wish to earn a teaching certificate along with a special education endorsement, may wish to apply to the Masters in Teaching with Special Education Endorsement program. This program is designed for students able to pursue a full time course of study.

Students in the M.Ed., Ed.S., and Endorsement Only programs can begin the program during any quarter. Courses during the academic year meet in the late afternoon and evening hours; most summer courses meet during the day. Part-time students can complete the program in three years. Students are admitted to the Master in Teaching with Special Education Endorsement program in March of every year. Students enrolled in the Master in Teaching with Special Endorsement can complete the program in six quarters of full time study (four quarters during the academic year and two summer quarters).
