Nationwide, over 6,000,000 children are now being served in special education in the public schools. Throughout the United States, there is a shortage of well-trained special education teachers. Graduates of the Special Education program will find that their skills are in high demand. The job is challenging and highly rewarding.
The program is primarily centered upon those students with learning, mental retardations, and/or behavioral difficulties and also provides training in how to work with students with other disabilities. All students take several courses in special education designed to give an overview of the field, types of disabilities, effective interventions, and current issues. Students complete a series of coursework designed to give a strong foundation in literacy development and effective reading instruction. Additionally, extensive coursework in behavioral disorders and intervention to enable them to effectively work with students with behavioral difficulties.
